Valerie Ng – Artist Talk and Workshop with Raffles Institution

On 21st of April, Valerie Ng conducted a talk & workshop for 20 students from Raffles Institution.

The talk & workshop was about Valerie’s methods and techniques to her unique abstract style of painting and mixing paints together. The students learnt the process behind each painting which she had introduced and the idea/inspired that formed the bulk of Valerie’s interest.

Valerie worked mainly in oil or acrylic in abstract expressionist style that resulted from her exploration in colour, light, depth, form and texture, and inspired by the natural elements, hues and shapes in the environment.

Valerie took up painting seriously in 2002 after attending the Alternative Foundation in Fine Art at The Slade Summer School, The Slade School of Fine Art, University College of London, UK.

Her paintings have been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum as well as the National Art Gallery, Malaysia. She has held several solo exhibitions including at the Substation and Wetterling Teo Gallery, as well as group exhibitions at instinc, Telok Kurau Studios and Jendela Gallery at the Esplanade. In addition, her paintings have been auctioned by Larasati Auctioneers in Singapore.

She won First Prize in the Abstract medium category, United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year 2004 Competition (Singapore) as well as Highly-Commended awards in 2006. Has received a Distinction in the Malaysian Art Competition (2007) and been selected for the Young Contemporaries 2006 in Malaysia.

A Malaysian based in Singapore, she was part of arts collective instinc in 2006, and has done artist residencies at the Vermont Studios Center, USA in 2009 and Nes, Iceland in 2010. Her paintings can be found in corporate and private collections in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, Mexico, Sweden and Germany.
