Playing With & For The Community
Singapore Contemporary Young Artists (SCYA) is proud to present Family Pictures, a multi-medium art exhibition featuring 9 artists in works of Photography, Painting, Video, Installation Art and Literature looking into family pictures.
Family Pictures hopes to send the message that the family and often the most personal matters are the greatest source of inspiration. Showcasing these works serves as reminder and evidence of the importance of the family unit, and the need to confront issues when presented.
Expect varied tone, approaches and perspectives of “family pictures” such as Wong Tze Chau’s painting of holy families as he studies the depiction of gods and domestic family in 1800s western painting to realist Indian paintings. Also, look out for Rachel Elffin’s Quaint Familia, video of her family that focuses on the shifts in mood and tone.
Other interesting artworks are Jacquelyn Soo’s performance video of her family members seen through her eyes in a voyeuristic perspective while Malvina Tan alters the physical state of photographs to explore the possibility of pushing the physicality of memories. Sha Najak, on the other hand, works with oral histories and old pictures to retell her mother’s childhood. Participating Artists for this exhibition are: Wong Tze Chau, Rachel Elffin, Jacquelyn Soo, Malvina Tan, Sha Najak, Kelvin Atmadibrata, Yoricko Liu, Rachel Chan & Benedict Chen.
Family Pictures is curated by Benedict Chen, a member of the Singapore Contemporary Young Artists Society.
Family Pictures opens on 13 January 2012, 630pm and runs till 27 January 2012 at SCYA Space (Blk B, #03-08 – 90, Goodman Road Singapore 439053)
