Playing With & For The Community
The Singaporean Subway opened last Friday, 13th December 2013 at the Goodman Arts Centre Gallery.
It is SCYA’s very own member, Benedict Chen, debut solo exhibition featuring his trademark black and white photography.
The exhibition featured the interesting portraits of the commuters in the MRT. Benedict has spent his days tracing lives and stories through his series of photographs. Inevitably fleeting moments, once captured, what emerge, are multiplicities of life contained and transported on the MRTs of the 2.7 million people who ride its 4 lines every day. The collected images are a cross-section of Singapore’s common people, focusing starkly on their impermeable live: a collective, yet powerful individual.
While the walkthrough of the exhibition may be slightly daunting with portraits of strangers hanging on the walls around you, this exhibition will show you the kind of community that we have moulded to be to accommodate with the increase in crowding on our train system. The series of photographs will leave an impression of our unique local lifestyle, that you may not realize as we find ourselves constantly occupied with our iPhones and iPads.
The delicious cakes were catered by Elffin & Elffin, a partnership formed by one of our members Rachel Elffin.
The Singaporean Subway Exhibition is still running at the
Goodman Arts Centre Gallery, until 22 December 2013 from 12pm to 6pm.
