Caricature and Manga workshop by Biddy Low

SCYA held a caricature and manga drawing workshop at Anglican High taught by Biddy Low! The workshop was held on 20th and 21st. It was a great (dare I say) workshop as the students came up with amazing drawings of caricature and manga!

In the first 2 hours of the workshop, the students were taught to draw caricature, including adding colour and making their caricature in their own style. The students were grouped in 4s and given a character each. The characters were from the 1971 meeting of the Governors, declaration of the founding of Singapore. The characters include, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, former British Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, and former Zambian Prime Minister Kenneth Kaunda.

The second part of the workshop held in a span of one hour, was the manga drawing tutorial. Biddy demonstrated the style of Chibi Manga, where the characters are so irresistibly adorable!

Biddy demonstrating how to draw Kenneth Kaunda. She describes Kenneth’s outstanding feature as his high forehead and mega-watt smile.

Biddy’s tips for caricature drawing are to find outstanding features of the individual, emphasising these features, and to get the distance between features right. For Chibi manga, the features must be exact so quite a bit of guidelines should be utilised.

All in all, we had an amazing time hosting and assisting the workshop. It seems the students had fun, and learn a thing or two too!
