Art Tour with SCYA – An Educational Art Tour for Children from Shanghai, China

A tour agency from Shanghai, China and SCYA held an interesting art education tour for children from Shanghai recently on 15th Aug to 17th Aug 2015. The two organisations collaborated to create a fun and rewarding art educational tour which involved touring several art spaces, museums, galleries and actual painting of the children’s ideas, sights and experience.

This initiative was first started when the travel agency wanted a hands on experience with a Singaporean Artist and to give back to their customers, a chance to learn an art skill.

SCYA suggested a few ways and options in experiencing and exploring the Arts in Singapore. We invited Ms Biddy Low to conduct the Art Tour and Art painting workshop for the children. She then invited 2 other persons to assist in providing more information about the history and architecture of selected buildings.

The group went around to these places and viewed their exhibits: Art Science Museum, Esplanade, Singapore Art Museum, Gillman Barracks, Philatelic Museum, Singapore Pinacotheque De Paris. Each location provided a different insight into the different visual  artforms that Singapore has consolidated in both national and private museums. At the Philatelic Museum, the children also wrote postcards to themselves that they posted back to Shanghai as a special keepsake.

On the third day, the group visited SCYA studio in Goodman Art Centre and spent their time drawing and painting what captivated them the most from the trip. In the spirit of encouraging expression and enjoyment in creation, we encouraged the participants to explore their minds instead of painting from reference. 6-year old Kang Kang for example, decided to paint a picture of figurines he had seen in an exhibit at SAM, while another decided to paint a selfie of herself which she took here.

Here are some photos of the journey and works:
